When cold weather and shorter days arrive we tend to spend more time indoors while also often being exposed to more infections.

Therefore it is important to keep in mind these steps:

  • If you present any symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose, etc), then the first step is to go home and stay at home. This step is the first and most important, in order to avoid spreading the infection to others.
  • It is necessary to consult a health care worker – usually with your family doctor or family nurse – contact free. It is important, because in a physical waiting room you could infect other people or, the other way around, get infected yourself by someone in the waiting room.
  • The doctor or nurse evaluates the need for Covid-19 testing. Typically the test is performed when symptoms are present, but it is important to take into account other factors as well (has the patient recently arrived from a trip, has the patient been in contact with other infected people etc).
  • If the symptoms appeared while at the work place, it is important to thoroughly clean the rooms the sick person was in. The colleagues, who were in contact with the person with symptoms, should be instructed to go home as well (if possible) and closely monitor their health condition.

If you are staying at home, it is also important to be mindful about the hygiene in your surrounding environment:

  • Use a one-time napkin/tissue when you need to blow your nose or sneeze
  • Be in contact with the sick person as much as necessary, but as rarely as possible
  • Try not to share household objects, such as cutlery, dishes, towels etc
  • Wash your hands when they are dirty; after you sneeze/cough; after using the washroom; after being in contact with the sick family member
  • Monitor the health condition of every household member
  • Ventilate the rooms a couple of times a day
  • Wash the laundry as usual – but be mindful that your hands are clean before you touch the clean laundry
